Recessional Christ triumphant

As three years ago, the main focus of our music today, prompted by the second reading and the Gospel, was the crucified Christ.

Vincent Raymond, 1932-2015

Vincent Raymond sang with the choir from 2000 to 2013, retiring at the astonishing age of 81 in order to conserve his energies for his orchestral playing, as deputy leader of the Manchester Beethoven Orchestra. It was his second stint in the choir, the first one stretching from about 1960 to about 1980. In all, then, he served the cathedral choir for over thirty years, and was a splendid example of enthusiastic dedication. His 80th birthday celebrations were perhaps something the choir had never had before, and never will again. Requiescat in pace.

Several of today’s musical selections tied in with the Gospel story of the Transfiguration, including Hic est Filius (Here is my Son, the beloved) by Diego de las Muelas, yet another interesting find on CPDL. Today’s piece is one of a series of short Lenten motets; I’d like to come back to some of the others.

We tried out Stay with us, Lord both as a refrain for the bidding prayers and, with the verses, as a recessional hymn. The two versions were sufficiently different in feel, that both seemed to work. Download it here if you’d like to try it out. (Scroll to the bottom of the home page and click on the second pair of links.)
