24 Hours for the Lord (the Internet tells me) is a worldwide initiative called for by Pope Francis to invite all people to receive the mercy of God through Eucharistic Adoration and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Here at the Cathedral it turned out to be 36 hours for the Lord, since the two periods originally planned—9 am to 9 pm on consecutive days—were added to by popular demand with an all-night vigil linking the two. We provided the music for a late-night Mass to mark the start of the vigil. The musical fare was simple and thoughtful, led by a handful of singers and yours truly at the piano. I think it set the right tone for a night of contemplation.

For Lent this year, a return to Mass XVII. The Sanctus and Agnus Dei seem to draw a more enthusiastic response from our singing assembly than Mass XI (Missa Orbis Factor), which we've had in Lent for the last three years. The ‘major key’ feel of Mode 5 has something to do with it, I think, and the Orbis Factor Agnus Dei is a particularly tricky one.
