One of those Sundays when the mix of music was as eclectic and wide-ranging as it was possible to be, within the bounds (though I say so myself) of good taste and liturgical propriety. It was a new departure for us to sing Jaime Cortez’s bilingual English/Spanish psalm setting in both languages, complete with guitar, piano and percussion accompaniment. It garnered an enthusiastic response from the congregation, not least our sizeable Latin American contingent. I’m looking for more good bilingual items, not just Spanish, but languages of West Africa too. Any suggestions?

I imagine every Cathedral in the country had to solve the problem of Rome’s scheduling the closing celebration for the Year of Mercy on Remembrance Sunday. Bishop John had to be elsewhere in the morning, so we gathered in the evening to close the Holy Door. The musical fare included Paul Inwood’s official hymn for the jubilee year, and (by request) our take on the official hymn for World Youth Day 2016.

We sang Chris Walker’s simple prayerful setting for cantor and ostinato chorus of today’s Offertory antiphon from the Gradual, with words from Psalm 140(141): dirigatur oratio mea sicut incensum in conspectu tuo, Domine. It was a good match for the Entrance antiphon too (from Psalm 87(88)): Let my prayer come into your presence.
